The bioscience and biomedicine industries are today among the fastest-growing sectors in the Göteborg region. There are about 400 companies here that employ almost 7,000 people. Half of these companies conduct their own product development. The ten leading firms in the region are AstraZeneca AB, Astra Tech AB, Mölnlycke Health Care AB, Tamro AB, Kronans Droghandel AB, Nobel Biocare AB, Cochlear Bone Anchored Solutions AB, APL AB, Onemed Sverige AB and Carmel Pharma AB. Alongside these is a very large number of small and medium-sized development companies. The sector had a total turnover of 39,800 million Swedish kronor in this region in 2009.Western Sweden is a world leader in many specialist treatment areas, such as for cardiovascular diseases, metabolic diseases such as diabetes and obesity, and biomaterials and cell therapy. The region´s well-established cooperation between industry, academia and the health-care system together with the availability of a well-educated workforce creates a good climate for both small and large companies. The medical sector is undergoing considerable expansion, particularly in the area of stem-cell research. Göteborg and Stockholm together offer more than 30 percent of the world´s stem-cell research programmes. Göteborg accounts for the majority. |
| Business Region Göteborg´s biomedicine project aims primarily at:- supporting the growth of companies involved in the industry
- attracting foreign investment to the region, and
- increasing the commercialisation rate for medical innovations, which in the longer run leads to better care and treatment for patients.
