The west Swedish biogas cluster
The west Swedish biogas cluster
The biogas cluster's different areas
The whole biogas chain and the cluster can be divided into different areas - substrates, production, distribution, market, vehicles and research & development.
Substrates & production
Biogas can be produced by two production processes - anaerobic digestion and thermal gasification. During digestion the microorganisms break down organic material in an oxygen-free (anaerobic) environment and then mainly methane and carbon dioxide are formed. Gasification is a thermochemical process in which organic matter is converted into gaseous fuels at high temperatures, typically 600-1000 degrees C. The gas produced consists mainly of carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, methane and hydrogen. The gas is purified and methanized.

In order that biogas can be used as vehicle fuel or blended with natural gas it must be purified from water vapor, particles and carbon dioxide, which raises the energy value in the gas. Cleaning and increasing the energy value in the gas is called upgrading.
The biogas used as fuel for vehicles must follow the Swedish standard, SS 15 54 38. The gas will then contain 97 + 1% methane.
