There are two gasification projects in western Sweden - Gothenburg Biomass Gasification Project (GoBiGas), a collaboration between Göteborg Energi and E.ON, and the Chalmers gasifier research project, which is operated by Chalmers, Göteborg Energi, Metso Power and Akademiska Hus.Chalmers gasifier
is a research facility on an industrial scale and the largest research gasifier for biomass in the world. The facility is also equipped in such a way that it is possible to follow the different gasification processes in detail, which is not possible in other existing facilities. As one of the world's leading manufacturers of boilers and gasification equipment for biomass, the company Metso Power contributes by giving the research project a more commercial focus and boosting its commercialization potential.
About the Chalmers gasifier (PDF)
The Gothenburg Biomass Gasification Project, GoBiGas, is an investment in biogas production by means of thermal gasification of biofuel from forestry. The gas will be used for vehicle fuel, industrial processes and cogeneration amongst other things. The plant will be located in Ryaområdet on Hisingen. The location is selected so that the plant will be close to a hub for Gothenburg's electricity, gas and district heating networks, as well as because it allows long-term and flexible fuel deliveries as it has the prerequisites for both sea and rail transport. The cooling water for the process can be taken from the adjacent river Göta Älv. By 2020 the plant is scheduled for completion, it will then produce 1 TWh of biogas. About GoBigas
