There are great advantages with the technology, including about 25 percent less energy consumption compared to traditional solutions for gas operation, as well as having the same power output and driveability as conventional diesel trucks. The environmental benefits of the gas-powered vehicles are great because biomethane emits smaller amounts of greenhouse gases than diesel does. 

Purpose
The purpose of the BiMeTrucks project is to develop a market for heavy long-haul vehicles with energy-efficient methane diesel engines powered by liquid biomethane. At the same time an infrastructure for liquid biomethane must also be expanded to allow the use of the trucks. The setup of the project builds on the coordinated development of distribution, refueling and vehicle access in order to be able to offer customers a commercially viable alternative to diesel-powered heavy vehicles.  

In the future opportunities for the export of the vehicles will also open up, which in some markets can compete with conventional diesel vehicles. Technology for the production and distribution of liquid biomethane can also be a future export product.

Objectives
The project's objective is that at least 100 heavy long-haul vehicles powered by liquid biomethane shall be demonstrated. At least four filling stations for liquid methane shall also be built in Gothenburg, Stockholm and Malmo.  The first filing station operates already, built by the gas supplier FordonsGas in Oktober 2010 in Gothenburg

Project partners are Volvo, three major gas suppliers FordonsGas, AGA and Eon with the Gas Business Region Göteborg who are project managers.
