SP Technical Research Institute of Sweden founded the Waste Refinery national competence center in 2006 consisting of parties from industry, society and research. Most of the parties are located in the Västra Götaland region since much of the necessary knowledge and technology is available in the surrounding area. The focus is on the selected focus areas: systems analysis and technology development of thermal and biological conversion of waste to energy and material products.Purpose:
Waste Refinery's purpose is to promote resource-efficient, safe and environmentally friendly waste management, which can contribute in the long-term to reducing dependence on fossil fuels and contribute to a circulation of nutrients. This means that the center systematically evaluates, develops, demonstrates and integrates different technologies for the efficient extraction of energy and resources from waste.

The cluster which is linked to Waste Refinery consists of representatives from industry, society and research organizations. The total number of parties involved is 21, including Business Region Göteborg.
