The Swedish Public Transport Association has a plan to double the number of public transport passengers by 2020. In principle the idea is that the journeys should replace passenger car traffic as well as domestic flights to a certain extent. At the same time the environmental plan prescribes that public transport should achieve a 90% reduction of fossil carbon dioxide emissions.

One advantage with methane diesel buses is the high level of efficiency. Biogas can be used with the same high level of efficiency as diesel buses by means of the introduction of methane diesel buses. The high level of efficiency increases the opportunity to extend the driving distance for gas buses, which means that they become attractive for use in regional passenger services.

BiMe Bus is to demonstrate methane diesel technology in buses adapted for regional passenger services. Volvo Buses will carry out the technological development of methane diesel engines (approx. 20 buses) adapted for regional passenger services.

Objectives
Field testing to demonstrate the functionality and economy of the buses and the technology. Product development and offering to the market of energy-efficient regional buses with biogas and methane/diesel technology for regional passenger services on a commercial basis.

Operators
Project partners are Volvo Buses, Västtrafik the public transport company in West Sweden and  Business Region Göteborg who are project managers.
