Biogasproduction
Gryaab, located in Göteborg, the largest wastewater treatment plant in Scandinavia.

Waste
Thanks to intense research and development, waste is increasingly being regarded as a resource. InWest Sweden , incineration of household waste generates electricity and district heating, while organic waste is composted or digested, producing biogas. Both household and industrial waste is sorted and recycled, and then used in the manufacturing of new products.

Biogas — the fuel of today and the future
Biogas is a sustainable fuel that stands out from other biofuels because of the major environmental and socio-economic benefits that can be achieved. Biogas is a domestic fuel that can be produced locally, creating a more secure energy supply and reducing dependence on oil. Biogas can be produced from waste and residual products in virtually every country.

The biogas can also be fed into the natural gas grid. This means that the gas can reach the vehicle market and other areas of use in the electricity, heating and petrochemical sectors.

In Sweden biogas is used as fuel for cars, buses and trucks. This requires the biogas to be upgraded to fuel quality (vehicle gas). Methane gas for vehicles (biogas and natural gas) replaced around 18 million liters of petrol in 2007, which is expected to reduce greenhouse gases by the equivalent of 22,000 tonnes of CO2 per year.

By 2008Western Sweden had the best infrastructure in the country with 36 gas fuelling stations, approximately 7,000 vehicles and eight facilities producing biogas for automotive purposes. Investment in western Sweden in biogas facilities, the infrastructure, fuelling stations, pipelines and swapbodies up to and including 2007 is estimated at around SEK 670 million.
