Company description:
Clothing sales in Sweden alone are worth about EUR 7 billion a year and more than half of this clothing is manufactured in so-called developing countries and Eastern Europe. Much of today´s clothing and textile production is characterised by continual geographic movement to wherever production costs are lowest to maximise financial profits. Textile industry employees in these countries often suffer as a result, and the consequences are well-documented. The industry is also characterised by production methods that do not meet increasing demands for an ecologically sustainable society, as the raw materials, the textiles, are most commonly produced with little consideration for environmental impact.

Dem collective was founded in 2003 with aim of introducing a new concept for the design and production of clothing and accessories. The founding concept is to combine ecology, ethics, quality and good design with reasonably retail prices. The unique aspect is to produce designer clothing using only enviromentally-friendly, fair-traded raw meterials and to ensure that the production process at the textile factory adheres to the code of conduct established by the International Federation of Alternative Trade (IFAT, se www.ifat.org). People and the enviroment are respected throughout the entire manufacturing chain, from cotton field to finished garment. Consequently, dem collective supervises all production stages -by working in close collaboration with our raw meterial suppliers and directly managing the import process and the manufacture, export and sale of our products.

The textils dem collective uses in its production are made of 100% organically-grown cotton from Gujarat in northern India. Agrocel, the company producing our cotton is an IFAT member though the Indian umbrella organisation International Resources for Fairer Trade (IRFT). The textiles are exported from India to Sri Lanka, where dem collective in Kadawatha just north of Sri Lanka´s capital, Colombo has established a production unit, dem collective Lanka (pvt) Ltd in partnership with our companions: Ms Dammika Niroshenie, Mrs Hema Sri Pushpalatha, Mrs Wasanthi Rajendran, Mrs Rukmani Dharmalatha, Ms Indralatha Perera, Mr Saman Jayasinghe, Mr Athule Bandara, Mrs Ranjiri Wickramasinghe.
