Rail
The Swedish Rail Administration´s goal is to create prerequisites for more efficient rail transportation — for both passengers and freight customers.

The proportion of freight transported by rail to and from the Port of Göteborg has increased substantially every year for the past five years. The number of commuter trains between Göteborg and destinations in Sweden and the rest of Scandinavia has more than doubled over the same period.

In order to make freight transportation in the region more efficient, the Swedish Rail Administration is constructing among other things, the Marieholm ‘Triangle Track´. The ‘Triangle Track´ will create a direct connection between Norway/Lake Vänern district and the port trunk railroad and thus make the flow of freight traffic to and from the Port of Göteborg more efficient. Freight traffic to and from Norway and the Lake Vänern district is at present delayed by having to reverse the orientation of the train at the Sävenäs marshalling yard before being able to enter the port trunk railroad. The extra journey and reversing the train´s orientation takes about 35 minutes in each direction. The project is planned to be completed in 2007.

The Swedish Road Administration and the Swedish Rail Administration have joined together in a unique co-operation project to widen and extend the E 45 European highway and the Norway and Lake Vänern district line between Göteborg and Trollhättan. On the Agnesberg-Älvängen stretch, the two authorities are working literally side by side. The new double-track line and four-lane highway will share the strip of land between the Göta river and the rock cliff. The upgrading of the railway and the road is being done to meet the demand for better communications for both people and freight in the region.
The expanded road and rail connections are expected to come into operation in 2012.
