The Swedish Road Administration´s investments in improvements to the road network in the Göteborg Region is continuing. In 2006 the Götaleden expressway was officially opened with the 1.6 km tunnel that runs under the central areas of the city.

BanaVäg i Väst — the project to expand the existing road and railway line between Göteborg and Trollhättan into a four-lane highway and a double-track line — is one of Sweden´s biggest infrastructure projects.

When the work is finished, in 2012, the railway will have double its present freight capacity and the road (the E45 European highway) will be considerably easier to use and much safer.

The extension of the E6 European highway is continuing, with the construction of a motorway all the way from Göteborg to the Norwegian border. The construction of Partilänken, linking the E45 and the E20 European highways, will begin in 2008 and will take 3 years to complete.

Variable speed limits are being tried in several places, including the county of Halland, the Uddevalla Road Bridge, Tingstadsleden, and Mölndal. The aim is to increase road-users´ acceptance of the speed limits, control traffic flows, and improve road safety.
