International Seminar on Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine Spurred Great Interest
Some 100 persons attended the symposium on Innovative Cartilage and Bone Repair Advances in Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine arranged by GöteborgBIO on 27 March. The speakers brought the participiants on journey through novel methods and intriguing possibilities for today and the future.
Professor Krister Holmberg, Head of the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering at Chalmers University of Technology, opened the seminar stating how tissue engineering and regenerative medicine attracts a large interest, and how the two universities in Göteborg — Chalmers University of Technology and the University of Gothenburg — share an active interest within this field.

The Göteborg Region, thanks to the revolutionizing work of Professor Per-Ingvar Brånemark, has a strong tradition of research within this particular area and the research in cartilage repair has grown strong for the past years.

The seminar was chaired by Professor Paul Gatenholm , Chalmers, and Professor Peter Thomsen at University of Gothenburg respectively, preluding the Expertissues Network of Excellence-meeting in Göteborg on 28-29 March.

Among the presentors were Dr Samuel B Adams, Dr Mats Brittberg, Dr Boo Edgar , Dr Christer Hedman , Dr Claudio Migliaresi, PhD student Anders Palmquist , Dr Nicole Rotter, Dr Gian Salzmann, Dr Charles Secretan, Dr Felicia Suska and Ms Katarina Uddenberg.

The Expertissues Network of Excellence on Novel Therapeutic Strategies for Tissue Engineering of Bone and Cartilage Using Second Generation Biomimetic Scaffolds, is a network of excellence on tissue engineering of connective tissues, financed by the European Union Sixth Framework Programme over a five year-period (2004-2009). It brings together 23 partners from 13 countries and is co-ordinated by Professor Rui L. Reis at the University of Minho, Portugal.

Professor Reis also gave a talk, presenting the network, which was created with the aim of combatting the fragmentation of European research within this particular area. The Network also recently launched the Journal of Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine.
